FAQs

HOW DO I LOOK AFTER MY JEWELLERY?

To look after your jewellery we do not recommend exposing it to water for long periods, such as wearing it in the shower, bath, hot tubs or swimming. We recommend removing your jewellery when using chemicals such as hand creams, soaps, sanitisers, perfumes and fake tan.

To prevent your pieces becoming misshapen, store your jewellery carefully after wearing and avoiding banging, knocking or wearing your jewellery in bed.

HOW SHOULD I CLEAN MY JEWELLERY?

To clean your jewellery, we recommend using Goddard's Silver Cleaner with a Goddards polishing cloth. Alternatively, jewellery can be soaked in a solution of warm water and washing up liquid for 15 minutes, then buffed dry with a clean, soft towel.

WHAT IS RECYCLED SILVER?

Recycled silver is genuine silver reclaimed from existing sources such as old jewellery, silver household items, electronics and industrial scrap. As opposed to newly mined silver. It is refined to its pure state and repurposed, offering identical quality, durability and appearance to mined silver whilst significantly reducing the environmental impact and energy consumption.

DOES UME USE ALL RECYCLED SILVER?

Yes, we only use recycled silver. We either smelt down the scraps of silver left over from making a piece of jewellery and then roll it out into silver wire or sheet to reuse.

Or, at the end of every day, we brush the floor and surfaces of the studio where wasted filings, sweeps, and cut-offs have fallen. These are then sent to a bullion dealer who refines the silver from any other materials, melts it down into ingots, assesses the silver content (assaying), and pays UME based on the current market price minus a processing fee.

We will also buy in recycled silver from a bullion dealer to use in our designs, who has, on a larger scale, smelted it down and rolled it into sheet and wire, as all silversmiths work in this way.

WHY IS RECYCLED SILVER GOOD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT?

Recycled silver is environmentally friendly because   it reduces the need for destructive, energy-intensive mining, which causes deforestation, habitat destruction, and water pollution. By re-refining existing silver from old jewelry and electronics, this process cuts carbon emissions by roughly two-thirds compared to mining, supports a circular economy, and produces identical quality to new metal.

IS RECYCLED SILVER AS HIGH QUALITY AS NON RECYCLED SILVER?

Yes, recycled silver is exactly the same quality as non-recycled (newly mined) silver. No purity is lost in the process of extracting sterling silver from used sterling silver items. After the melting down of a sterling silver piece or scrap silver the ingot of silver produced at the end of the process is still pure silver.

IS ALL YOUR JEWELLERY HANDMADE?

Yes, every piece of jewellery is designed and handmade by the founder of UME, Emma Davies, using traditional silversmithing techniques in her home studio in North Wales.

HOW DO I FIND MY RING SIZE?

We recommend downloading our printable ring size instructions on how to measure your ring size or visit a local store for a professional measurement?

HOW DO I KNOW WHAT BANGLE SIZE I NEED TO ORDER?

We recommend downloading our printable bangle size instructions on how to measure your bangle size.

WHAT IF THE RING DOESN'T FIT? CAN ALL RINGS BE RESIZED?

We offer complimentary resizing within 30 days of purchase on eligible, unworn items. However, there are some rings that cannot be resized. This is mainly due to having stone settings. If this is the case then the ring may need to be remade which may take up to 4 weeks depending on the complexity of the design.

DO YOU HAVE A SHOP?

Currently UME does not have a shop and sells mainly from their website and at artisan markets and curated events.  We post the details of where UME will be exhibiting their work on social media.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LAB GROWN DIAMONDS AND MINED DIAMONDS?

The main difference between lab and mined diamonds is their origin:

Conflict-free mined diamonds have been extracted from the Earth. They were created by Mother Nature from carbon atoms subjected to intense volcanic heat and pressure deep underground more than 3 billion years ago.

Sustainable lab grown diamonds are grown by scientists in a laboratory. They are created from a tiny shard of a mined diamond which is introduced to carbon atoms, under conditions which replicate the volcanic forces of Mother Nature.

ARE LAB GROWN DIAMONDS FAKE DIAMONDS?

No, lab diamonds are not fake diamonds. Sometimes people confuse lab grown diamonds with simulants like cubic zirconia, which are not diamonds. But this is not the case with lab diamonds. Lab diamonds are, simply, diamonds.
